One Species a Thousand and One Styles

One of the most interesting aspects about bonsai is styling. Besides the normal traditional styles there are so many different bonsai styles you can create especially using Wrightia. Which is why bonsai is such an interesting hobby.

about styles

This section deals mainly in creating artistic bonsai. Bonsai is a work of art of an individual expression. Each individual has his/her own personal style and taste. Here, I would like to share you my personal creations. Perhaps some styles are unorthodox nevertheless, I hope it will give you some ideas of how you can add styles to your bonsai.

Basically, bonsai can be broadly categorised as “traditional” and “artistic styles.”

Traditional Styles

These are the mainstream bonsai styles of today and are widely practised by bonsai enthusiasts round the world. They are; formal, informal,  broom, cascading, slanting, forest, twin trunks style and so on. (See sketches on the right)

These beautiful styles are generally borrowed from nature. Take a walk in the forest and you are bound to see some of these styles. As a matter of fact, traditional styles are sometimes referred to as natural styles.

Trees created using traditional styles tend to look simple and natural. They have an aesthetic and lasting beauty.

If you need to learn more about creating traditional styles you can find it in the “Basic Guide on Traditional Bonsai CD.”  There are 8 traditional styles included in the CD.

Artistic Styles

Artistic bonsai is a freeform style of creating bonsai. It gives you more latitude in expressing your creativity. By utilising the basic techniques and knowledge of traditional bonsai you can create different artistic bonsai styles.

Artistic Styles

Here are some sketches of artistic styles.

The photos on the right show you the various shapes and styles you can create using Wrightia. Most of the trees have been defoliated to give you a better outline view.

Except for some old trees, most of the styles can be created within a short period of 3 to 5 years.
