the myths and mysteries about bonsai

To most people the art of creating bonsai sounds foreign and mysterious. Allow me dispel the myths and mysteries about bonsai. There are no mysteries to it in the first place. All it takes are simple gardening routines, some basic guidelines, keen interest and patience.

what is bonsai?

Generally, when we talk about bonsai it merely means the art of creating miniature trees small enough to be planted in a small shallow pot. However, the answer is only partially correct...

bonsai art

Bonsai is an art that involves a host of gardening techniques, disciplines and creative flair that adds beauty and styles to the tree.

There are no secrets in creating bonsai. Anyone can create a beautiful bonsai. It is not difficult. There are no secrets to it except adhering to some basic guidelines and gardening routines. All it takes are keen interest, creative flair and patience.

There are many styles and shapes you can create. Generally, these styles or shapes namely, formal, informal, slanting, forest, twin trunks and cascading styles are commonly known as traditional or classic styles. These styles are mainly copied or borrowed from nature and are the mainstream styles of today.

However, you are not solely confined to these styles. Bonsai is an art form. It offers you the platform to express your creativity. There is no limit to your creations. That is why bonsai is such an interesting hobby.

long term commitment

Bonsai is a long term commitment. It is not a hobby where you can see the result overnight. As a matter of fact, it takes years before you can see the fruits of your labour.

Patience and time are the key ingredients to a beautiful bonsai. Whatever the outcome depends very much on your efforts and commitments. There is an old classic Chinese saying:

Bonsai involves a host of gardening techniques, disciplines and creative flair that adds beauty to the tree.

These are the common traditional styles of today. They are universally practised  and are recognised as the mainstream bonsai styles of today.
